- Citation and Certificate
The IMC Ladies’ Wing Jankidevi Bajaj Puraskar was established in 1993 to mark Jankideviji’s birth centenary. It is India’s most prestigious recognition, celebrating women entrepreneurs who develop self-sustaining ventures to empower rural communities through livelihoods, dignity and social upliftment.
The life of Smt. Jankidevi Bajaj (1893–1979) is a story of sacrifice, courage and fortitude. Born into a prosperous Vaishnav Marwari family in Jaora, Madhya Pradesh, her life took a decisive turn at the age of 8 when she was married to Jamnalal Bajaj, then 12, in 1902.
Growing into womanhood in the Bajaj household of Wardha, which later became a centre for Gandhian ideals and patriotism, Jankideviji dedicated her life to Swadeshi (Homegrown/Indigenous), Atmanirbharta (Self-Reliance), and Swarajya (Self-Rule).
About
The IMC Ladies’ Wing of the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, established in 1966, has stood tall as a pioneering platform for women. What began as a small forum under the aegis of the Indian Merchants’ Chamber has today blossomed into India’s oldest and most dynamic women’s business organization – a movement that has inspired countless similar initiatives across the nation.
"SWADHEEN" weaves together the historical, social and economic contexts of Khadi, the hand-spun Fabric of Freedom.
SWADHEEN stems from Smt. Kiran Bajaj's long-standing dream to create a platform that highlights the selfless work of freedom fighters like Jankidevi Bajaj and others, committed to Swadeshi. “Everyone benefits from khadi,” she states. “It offers employment and dignity to poor cotton growers and weavers, boosts the Indian economy and fills us with pride in this versatile fabric”. She envisions expanding khadi into global markets through fashion, home goods, furnishings, accessories and soft toys. “However, this depends on our fashion designers to take khadi forward with creativity and commitment to quality".
